How to Keep Your Kids Busy during Ramadhan

Assalamu'alaikum.

There's no secret that when it comes to kids, there are nothing to keep them sit still more than 5 minutes. They always want to do things, different things, all the time. Hellaw, exhausted mom's here! Apparently, during Ramadhan, it's even more challenging for us to make them "forget" that they are fasting. When they have nothing to do or feel bored doing something, they'll come to you and ask, "How much longer. mom?" or, "Can I break my fasting now?"

Telling them to read books all day is not really an answer, especially if you have active kids like mine. Giving them tablets and laptops, and let them play games all day until iftar? Heck NO! Parents these days have to be more creative to make the kids busy during Ramadhan. Yes, we can ask them to do more ibadah like doing sholah sunnah and recite Al Qur'an. But how long do you think it will prevent you from the same whining?

After so many years of having Ramadhan with kids, I know that each year I have to come up with plans to keep them busy. Especially this year, we're having Ramadhan at the same time for school holiday in Indonesia. Allah, have mercy on me.

These are what I can make my kids doing during the days of Ramadhan, for my little girl especially. Luckily, she has her cousins (my nieces) visiting from Singapore for few days. So, we can create something to do together with them. The more the merrier, right?

Painting Mugs

Oh, well. As you all know, I sell painted and lettered mugs. So, I have some spare mugs at home. I have all the tools, like markers, expensive one. -_- Usually, I never let my daughter touch my markers. So, when I told her that she and her cousins can paint mugs, she got very excited.

I predicted that they will finish it like in five minutes because they got bored. But no, I told them, they have to follow my instruction if they want a pretty and good quality mugs like I made. They had to start from cleaning the mugs. And then painted it. Painted it in serious way, because I told them, once the mugs go into the oven, they couldn't change anything of their designs. It will stay forever like that. And at last, I let them put their mugs into the oven, set the temperature and wait for it to bake for like 1 hour.

Result? I made them spend 3 hours without even remember that they were fasting. Hahaha!

Doodling and Crafting

Well, this one is actually almost every Ramadhan activity I have for my kids. Since I have all the tools and equipment, it has to be the easy way out for me. This year, I know I have to give a little twist to make my daughter feel that this activity (that becomes too usual for her) is different. I let them play with all my markers, my paint, my crafting papers, my glue and all my stuff on my crafting table. Oh well, I can buy those again later, as long as they're happy, and BUSY!

Happily, Safina and Fikri (one of her cousin) made banner for them to pretend that they're having a shop. It gave me another idea to do for another day with them. We're going to open our shop in front of the house the next day! When I told them that, they got super excited.

Snacks for Sale

The next day, we went to a mini market to buy some snacks for them to sell. We bought candies, peanuts, marsmallow, syrup, plastics and ribbons. The whole day we were busy to prepare all the snacks. They put the syrup into the plastic and put them into the freezer. Then they cut marsmallow into small pieces and stack them on the skewers. They also put some candies and peanuts into the plastic bags.

I helped  them making the sign and the price tags. That's all. The next day, we put a small table in front of the house in the afternoon. Kids usually play outside before iftar (magrib) time arrive. But from the beginning I warn those three girls, this is not about how much money they will make. This is about HAVING FUN together and be confident meeting new people. Especially, those three don't really speak Indonesian fluently. My nieces live in Singapore since they were born. My daughter? Yes, she lives in Bekasi (Indonesia) since day one, but I raise her in bilingual environment. And lately, she speaks English better than Indonesian. So, they just have to find a way to sell their snacks. I just watch from the distance. Hahaha.

Half an hour before Magrib, they collected Rp 35.000. Not bad for first attempt, girls! My oldest niece said, "Tomorrow we'll bring all the rest of the snacks to Atuk's (granpa) house and force everybody there to buy!" LOL! Talking about business!

My two nieces has gone back to Singapore few days ago. Now, my nephew from Malaysia (11 years old) comes to Jakarta. I have to find another way to keep my kids and their cousin busy. Because this time it's a boy additional in the family, I can't use the same activities. HELP!

Well, you can always take them to the movie or restaurant for dinner, though. But heck, not everyday! :v

Blogs as A Beautiful Neighborhood

Assalamu'alaikum.

Welcome back to my-almost-forgotten-english-post. LOL. I know, I have promised you that I will post in English at least once a week, and I didn't keep my promise last year. Sorry .... :( But, starting this year, I will try to make it happen every week. Bismillaah!

I'm just gonna keep this post light, chit-chatting about something fun for me: blogging. Wait, on a second thought, blogging doesn't seem so fun anymore lately. :( The atmosphere of blogging, especially in Indonesia has turned to another direction. I usually embrace every dynamic change in every aspects of life. I'm really grateful that today bloggers are so appreciated by most of important parties, especially in Indonesia. You name it, big companies, government, social movements. They are all embracing bloggers in every events and campaigns.

This has lead the aura of blogging to some directions. As a blogger, I'm really happy that my voice matters for any interests that other people want to speak up. I help some social campaigns as well as commercial ones. It gives benefits too to me. But the competitiveness among bloggers is also heating up. Some of them are taking it too seriously. It makes them do stuff that does not look pretty online.

Instead of stick to the roots of blogging: sharing and connecting, they use their power to talk down to other bloggers that they think might be the competitors to them. Insinuations on social media have been a regular show on my timeline. It makes me sick. I miss the old blogging days, where bloggers are just as fun as a carefree young girl running around on the prairie. (I know, my parable is so old, LOL).

I love to compete, but please, don't make it ugly. Competing with your friends is actually fun. It drives you to give out the best of you. What makes it look not so appealing anymore to me, some of them are trying to make others look lower than themselves. Laughing behind their own friends' backs. And ... here's the sickest part, when they meet each other, they take selfies together! Talking bad about your friends behind their back is one thing, but being a hypocrite is another thing. That's all I can say.

I'm not talking about all bloggers. This type of blogger is just a tiny numbers on my friends list. I hope the rest of you can stay as beautiful as you are already. Let's make our blogs a beautiful neighborhood. Stick to the roots of blogging; sharing and connecting. Other than that, it's a bonus.

I look awesome, right? :p

When My Mom and Dad Re-Creating Their Wedding

Assalamu'alaikum.

April 21st is a special day in our family. It was the day my Mom and Dad got married, back in 1972. This year, it's their 44th anniversary. I don't know the whole story of their love journey, but like most parents do, they shared it sometimes with us, their five children.

From their story, I know how they met for the first time. How my Dad purposed my Mom, and how their marriage life before I was born (I'm the second child in the family). After I was born and grow up, I witnessed most of their important moments in life. My Dad was at least had two major heart attack and kidney problem. My Mom at least had been through three or four major surgeries.

I was 25 years old when I left home because I got married and live in different house. My twenty five years living with my parents, I never EVER see them fighting in front of me and my siblings. Yes, they arguing sometimes, which is normal. But never had I seen them fighting over each other, blaming one another, never. My Mom respects my Dad so much. And My Dad would give anything for my Mom, including his life. *I literally started teary right now*

Three years ago was an unforgettable moment for our family and the exact moment when I really realized how much they love each other. My Mom had an implant heart valve surgery. The surgery went very well. Her heart is fully recovered. But what we didn't expect was she got a post surgery traumatic syndrome. She had somekind of anxiety disorder. She started to melt down within days. I can't even remember how many time she got panic attack and screaming for taking her to the hospital. Days or night. It was a really gloomy days for our family. It was heart breaking seeing my Mom couldn't control herself like that.

Her condition like that went for like a year. During that time, once I caught My Dad cried so hard thinking about my Mom. It's another heart breaking moment for me. I would never know how he felt that time. It must be harder for him than it was for me. But never, not even once, I saw him giving up or being upset to my Mom. He's the most patient person I ever know my whole life. Sometimes I think, maybe my Dad is an angel. It was not easier for my Mom either. She knew that there was something wrong inside her, but she couldn't control it. And she knew that she made our family, especially my Dad, in deep stress. But, there was nothing she could do. This fact made her even more depressed. She needed help.

Thank God, we found help for her. We took her to a psychiatrist. Slowly she got better. But it was my Dad who is always beside her and my Mom's determination to get better. It was hard, for both of them. If they don't love each other, they won't be still together today. It was love that cured her.

This year, on 21st April, was their 44th anniversary. Five children, eight grand children and countless places they've been traveled to together. Last week they traveled to West Sumatera, their homeland. And just yesterday, they sent us pictures that immediately made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. They went to Istana Pagaruyuang (Pagaruyung Palace) and wore traditional bride and groom's costume, the similar one they wore when they got married 44 years ago. In fact, I and my husband also wore the same type of wedding costume too. They re-creating their wedding, after 44 years, after so many things they've been through together, after so many places they've been traveled together, after so many tears and laugh they've shared together.

All I can say in my heart is just, "Alhamdulillah." Thank you, Allah. You still give them a chance to live their life full of love until now. I wish them well and the best 'till the end. I wish I can have the same chance they get. I wish all of us can experience love like them. I should stop now, because now I'm crying. :')

Kursus Bahasa Inggris Online Lewat WhatsApp/BBM

Assalamu'alaikum.

Satu murid, satu guru. Hwow!

Kursus pun berjalan lumayan lancar melalui WhatsApp.

Yah, emang sih, diskriminasi amat kalau milihnya cuma berdasarkan foto, ya. Milih guru apa cari jodoh? Hahaha. Jadi jangan sungkan nanya sama adminnya sebelum kamu menentukan pilihan. Misalnya, "Mbak, saya maunya gurunya yang galak. Soalnya saya galak. Nggak lucu kan kalau gurunya jiper sama saya?" Ntar dicariin guru yang galak, deh. Hahaha. Atau, "Mbak, suami saya cuma bolehin saya belajar sama guru perempuan." Nah, bisa banget itu. Ah, pokoknya fleksibel, deh.

- Jangan sungkan bertanya.
Ini mah saya banget. Dasarnya saya orangnya ogah rugi. Ya masak udah kursus privat, nggak dipakai kesempatan buat nanya-nanya? Gengsi? Takut keliatan begonya? Jiailah, kalo mau pencitraan, gak usah kursus, pasang status aja di FB. Eh. Pokoknya, jangan buang kesempatan emas untuk bertanya sebanyak-banyaknya. Kalau perlu, sebelum kelas dimulai, kamu udah nyiapin pertanyaan buat gurunya.

-Minta review sama gurunya.
Hahaha.

Yasudlah, tunggu apa lagi? :v

Top 5 Most Viewed Posts on 2015 (And Why It's Popular)

Assalamu'alaikum.

I just read an article from one of social media experts yesterday. She asked, "Have you ever put together a "best of 2015" content article? If not, I would love to encourage to you consider it!" Why? Because you and many people who read your post will get a great values. You will be able to see what trends your blog was tending for the past year. From there, you'll be able to set new goals. For your visitors, they will be able to see some of your best contents for the last year. So, without further do, here are my top 5 contents of 2015 based on Google Analytics.

This post is my review about a very popular English course in Indonesia. I happened to experienced the placement test for my son. The tittle is intriguing, and the fact that this post is also my all time most viewed, it shows that there are a lot of people out there who is looking for this type of post. I suggest you to write similar post, especially if you have the experience. That would be great for your blog and useful for your readers.

This was my old post, but still get the second place for the most viewed article on 2015. It is my tutorial of hand sewing my daughter's dress. It was my first and only experience sewing my daughter's dress. I was so excited and happy with the result. I also post step by step pictures there. I guess the words "Hand Sewing" were one of the things that drove people to come. If you have crafter's hands and a DIY's enthusiast, make some kind of tutorial posts on your blog would be great. I never realized that there are a lot of people looked for this kind of post until I posted it. Now, I have a special section here called "Tutorial and DIY"

Oh, it's no secret that hosting a blog competition or giveaways will give such tremendous visits for your blog. I usually hosted one or two blog competitions/giveaways in a year. It's a win-win event, fun for everybody. I got the traffic, the contestants got the chance to win something. Not to mention, you get new followers, and that means you get new friends. It's highly recommended activity for your blog. At least do it once a year. It's even better if you can get sponsor.

This post is my review about a very popular funpark in Jakarta, Dunia Fantasi (Fantasy Land). I wrote it completely, from the ticket price to the how-to explore the whole area in there. And I also gave some tips so people won't be wasting their times there. I guess, because it's such a very popular tourism attraction, many people research the articles that contain the name; Dufan. This is also one of my all time most viewed post. So, for you who like to travel and visit interesting places, give some effort to write it down on your blog. A lot of people get help from there.

I'm not normally make this kind of tittle for a blog post. But since this post was to promote my new book, I used it. And, tadaaa! Some of you are so desperately looking for love. Hahaha. Other than that, I think this post is also popular because I put some of my Facebook's friends comments in there. I made some kind of polling about what stupid things they have ever done because of love. My suggestion, polling is another good way to increase your blog traffic.

So, there! My Top 5 Most Viewed Posts on 2015. What's yours? ;)

Assalamu'alaikum.

When you have the chance to visit Jakarta (Indonesia) and need to find ethnic souvenirs from all over Indonesia, don't hesitate to come to Smesco Building (SME Tower) in Jalan Gatot Subroto, Jakarta. They have, what they call now, Galeri Indonesia WOW! (Indonesia WOW! Gallery). This gallery is the place for handcrafted souvenirs, fabrics, food and drink from all over Indonesia which are curated by the expert to earn the spots in that super cozy gallery.

Honestly, as Indonesian who lives not to far away from Jakarta, last week was my second time to see this gallery. Once I got there, I made a promise to myself, I would definitely come back again soon. I was lucky enough to get the invitation of the opening of Galeri Indonesia WOW!. I got the chance to hear about "What is it with this gallery that can be so special?" from the Director of Smesco Indonesia, Mr. Ahmad Zabadi

Some of you might not know what is Smesco actually? Smesco (Small and Medium Enterprises and Cooperatives) is a place that founded by the government of Indonesia to support small and medium enterprises from all places in Indonesia. Indonesia with thousands of beautiful islands has various options of souvenirs, fabrics, wood crafted, food, even coffee. If you don't have the time to explore Indonesia (like really, there are like more than 10.000 islands to explore!), this gallery will be your best option to find unique souvenirs to bring home.

Galeri Indonesia WOW! was actually UKM Gallery before it changed the name and concep. When it was still UKM Gallery, it was just a place to see the creation of Indonesians crafter from all over Indonesia. Now, Galeri Indonesia WOW! is more than just a gallery.

They bring the mission of supporting local brands of Indonesia. With five spirits: creativity, opportunity, productivity, profitability and reinvestment, Smesco is doing their best to be the home of Indonesians to show their best products there. Hopefully, in the future, not only personal buyers who come to see and make purchases to their products, but also attract investors from all over the world.

I've seen some of the products in the gallery, and yes, I'm pretty sure that they are really good quality. As a matter of fact, Mr. Zabadi had told us, that all the products that are being displayed there had been curated by the experts. Do not worry about the price, because some of them are really reasonably cheap. For some products like furniture and batik/tenun, it might feel a bit pricey, but wait until you find out how long the making process took time. They are worth it.

For the producers of creative work from outside of Jakarta who need space for representative office, you can use Co-Working Space in Galeri Indonesia WOW!. Smesco also provides training for small and medium enterprises from all over Indonesia in their Maker Space. There will be experts to guide them to make their products more representative. Displaying concepts in Galeri Indonesia WOW! were divided into two types: Pop Up Store and Curated Concept Store. They both have different aspects to show. And last but not least, Galeri Indonesia WOW! also have Creative Space (stage) to be used by you who want to make creative events like workshops, art exhibition, crafting class and many more. Here are some pictures I've taken from the gallery.

By the way, Smesco also has some kind of online store, Smesco Trade. If you want to explore the gallery and still can't find time to go there, just visit the website. Good news for you who have been working on the handcrafted/creative work, you can always bring your products to Smesco. They will curate the products and if you pass their grade, you'll earn the spot for your products in Galeri Indonesia WOW! This coud be huge opportunity for your business. ;)

Hari Blogger Nasional: Why "A Full Time Blogger" Has Become The New Obsession?

Assalamu'alaikum.

Today is Indonesian Blogger's National Day! I don't really know the history of the day. From what I read, Blogger's National Day (Hari Blogger Nasional) was born on 2007 at Pesta Blogger event. Since I consider myself as a blogger, I think at least I have to speak up my point of view of being a blogger, especially in Indonesia.

I started blogging about 8 years ago. Some of you will say, "Whoaa!" Some of you won't even impress at all. I was a little bit late to be touched by technology called internet. When my sister had already had email address back then, I was still like, "What address again?" When some of you already had a bunch of online friends on MIRC, I was still like, "Where the hell is Mr. Postman? I'm waiting for my document!"

Knowing blog was really an awakening experience for me. I didn't realize how powerful words are when you write it down online. I mean, yeah, I read books. Lots of them. Loving it! Until now. I love writing, with my hands ... and pen. But, putting my written thought online, and knowing that there are people out there reading it, it was awesome!

Yes, I enjoy every single minute I spend here. Reading other blogs, interacting in bloggers communities, writing reviews, reporting events, etc. I met a lot of new friends, some of them become my new BFF. Some of them become my new BEF (if you know what I mean, LOL). Like Taylor Swift, my motivator, said, "Hater's gonna hate hate hate hate. Shake it off, shake it off." :v Not to mention, I can make money here. How cool is that?

Blogger has become the most wanted persona for various brands/companies. The progress of bloggers' life is so fast, that only pizza delivery can beat (less than 30 minutes). Suddenly, new bloggers with less than 5 years old blog appears to the surface. They seem have no problems at all catching up with older bloggers (hey, you know I'm not talking about age here). One by one, their names becomes famous in bloggers community. Some of them started to have fan base. Blogger is the new celebrity in town, yo! Awesome? Sure!

Seeing this phenomena of how Indonesian bloggers grow, especially the last 5 years, is amazing. Abruptly, your number of years of blogging is irrelevant to any situations at all. Older bloggers, new bloggers, young, old, famous, newbie, all have the same opportunity to take their blogs to the next level. The idea of becoming a full time or professional bloggers is not so dreamy anymore, even for the newbies. This is good. Competitive atmosphere among bloggers is heating up. I personally, respond to that fact in a positive way. It' s good, when you can compete to any bloggers from any background. Because when you survive, it will be some kind of evidence that you did good.

The idea of becoming a full time blogger doesn't sound so impossible anymore. When your blog has good performance, one day, probably you will think to quit your job and spend the day in front of your laptop, working on your blog and social media accounts. Who would turn down such offer? Working while you're still on your pijama, sipping coffee while publishing your article, making good photos without even leaving your bedroom or the chance to see new places and get paid. I was saying to myself, "Heck, yeah! I can totally be a full time blogger. I can learn and earn so much more!"

So, when the idea of becoming a full time blogger has become the new "IT" among bloggers, what should we do, what should we have and what should we improve? I maybe will disappoint some of you who expect some theories here. Because, same as you, for me this is still a plan. I'm still trying to figure out my way to be a full time blogger. I consider myself as an older blogger with younger experience. There are a lot of things I don't know about blogging, and it doesn't have anything to do with my 8 years of blogging. My blog and my interaction with my fellow bloggers are my space to learn new things, not only about blogging, but about so many things.

Why do I want to be a full time blogger? Because it opens so many doors, that's for sure. I got to meet famous, smart, inspiring, amazing people through blogging. I got to see other countries through blogging. I got to have many new things through blogging. And last but not least, I got hope through blogging. Hope of living a better life, hope of having beautiful friendship, hope of moving other's people heart and hope of becoming a better person, one post at a time.

If there is one advice I can give, "Be yourself, keep learning, don't give up!" This is not a specific advice for bloggers. This is a common advice for a better life. Since blogging has become my life, I adopt and apply that advice for my blogging life. Why I want to be a full time blogger? Because I want everything to be better. For me, my family, my friends, my environment, my country and the world. Bloggers, you should realize how big the power in your hand is. Why dreaming small, while the biggest achievement is waiting for you in the corner. Grab it! Happy Blogger's Day, Indonesia!

Dev and Ollie, Kite Crazy! Another Good Children Storybook

Assalamu'alaikum.

Hello! This is another children book review from me. Like last time, I received this book through my e-mail. You can get the paper back edition at Amazon, of course. This book I'm about to review is Dev and Ollie, Kite Crazy! written by Shweta Aggarwal. Let me just tell you about the book! Shall we? ^_^

It's Dev's birthday and his favorite present is a cool new kite. But there is a problem - he doesn't know how to fly it! Grandpa claims to be an expert and promises to teach Dev tomorrow but Dev is too impatient.
Ollie, Dev's bedtime magical owl, comes to rescue. Together, Dev and Ollie set off on an action packed journey to the one of the largest kite festivals in the world...in INDIA!

Yup! The story in this book is about a little boy named Dev and his magical toy owl, Ollie. Together, they have a magical adventure night to Kite Festival in Gujarat, India. There, Dev and Ollie met a boy named Rahul who was about to join the kite festival. Sadly, Ollie landed on some of Rahul's kites and broke them.

Dev and Ollie felt bad about it and tried to get another kites for Rahul. They went to the biggest kite market during the kite festival there, Patang Bazaar. And they met and old man, a kite maker. From there, the adventure kept going for Dev and Ollie. Will Dev be able to get the kites for Rahul? And who the old man really was?

I and my daughter enjoy the book. Although, for my 6 years-old daughter, the story might be too short and simple. This book suits to 2 to 5 years old, I think. It will be a great bed time story to tell. And, the illustration is colorful and attractive for little kids.

At the end part, you can also find some facts about Kite Festival in Gujarat and a little history about kite. Pretty useful! For a children book, I give this book 4,5 stars. Good story, great illustration and so much fun to read. Oh, and there will be more books about Dev and Ollie, coming soon! Yeay! ^_^
